ALANNAH MYLES
Born and raised in Toronto, rock vocalist Alannah Myles had to travel south of the border to secure fame and success in her home country. After spending several years touring non-stop in Canada fruitlessly attempting to get a record deal, Myles and her songwriting partner Christopher Ward changed their attack plans in the late '80sTargeting an American audience, Myles shopped her David Tyson-produced demo in the States. Almost immediately there was major label interest for the single, "Just One Kiss," and Myles signed to Atlantic Records. Ironically enough, upon the release of her eponymous debut album in 1989, the lead single, "Love Is," made her an immediate superstar in Canada. But the second single from the album, "Black Velvet," was what made Myles a worldwide sensation, propelling her album to multi-platinum status. The sultry blues-rocker also earned three Canadian Juno Awards and a Grammy for Best Rock Female Vocal Performance. Although "Black Velvet" made her a one-hit wonder in America, she remained a star in Canada. Her sophomore effort, Rockinghorse, was released in 1992, followed by Alannah in 1995. Her latest, Arrival, appeared on ARK 21 Records in 1998.
