DEBORAH COX
Canadian R&B chanteuse Deborah Cox was raised with music all around her. The daughter of two vocalists, Cox began singing professionally at the age of 12, performing in commercial jingles and in local bands. After graduating from one of Canada's most prestigious performing arts high schools, she landed a five-month stint as a backup singer for fellow Canadian Celine Dion. In 1992 Cox moved to Los Angeles where one of her demo tapes landed on the desk of Arista Records' Clive Davis, who offered her a recording contract at the label home of her idols Aretha Franklin, Toni Braxton and Whitney Houston. Cox hooked up with some of the best producers in the business, including Babyface and Keith Crouch, to help record her debut album. The self-titled release came out in 1995 and went gold in Cox's native Canada. The following year she won a Juno Award for best R&B/soul recording. Cox's sophomore effort, One Wish, was released on Arista in 1998.
