SHAKIRA
Although USA today has called her the "Latina Alanis Morissette" and comparisons have been made to Janis Joplin, Colombian singing sensation Shakira is far more ethereal and otherworldly than these comparisons suggest. Shakira blends American style pop-rock with traditional Latin rhythms and Arabic tinges to creat her own unique sound.
Shakira was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, to parents of Columbian and Lebanese descent. She has been dancing, writing and singing since age three and continues to write all of her own music. At age 13, Shakira released her first album “Magia” and in 1993 she released “Peligro.” Shakira returned to recording in 1995 with “Pies Descalzo,” which sold over 3.6 million copies worldwide.
Her fourth album, “Donde Estan los Ladrones,” reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Latin 50. Her next album “MTV Unplugged” was released in 1999 becoming her third straight platinum album and it also won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. Her first English-language album, “Laundry Service” released in late 2001, entered the American pop charts at number three. The follow-up, "Underneath Your Clothes," also hit the Top Ten. Shakira then returned with two albums, “Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1” and “Oral Fixation, Vol. 2” in 2005. As sales of “Oral Fixation” began to slow in early 2006, Epic reissued the album in March with, "Hip Don't Lie." It went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June 2006, becoming one of the summer's biggest hits.
