BOB MARLEY
Robert Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945 in St. Ann, Jamaica. Marley spent his youth in the city of Nine Miles, but in 1957 his mother moved the family to Kingston.. In 1962, Marley released his first single, "Judge Not". On February 10, 1966, Marley married Rita Anderson, and the next day they left to spend eight months in the United States with his mother and her new husband. With Bunny and McIntosh, Marley formed the Wailers, veering away from ska and taking on a slower, rock steady rhythm. In 1970, bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his brother, drummer Carlton, joined the Wailers. With the addition of the rock solid rhythm section, the Wailers became Caribbean superstars. Natty Dread was released in February 1975. Two nights of performing at the Lyceum Ballroom in London were culled for the properly titled live album, Live, later that year. 1976 saw the release of Rastaman Vibration and more critical and commercial success. The band was named Rolling Stone magazine's "Band of the Year." In 1978 Marley was awarded the United Nations Medal of Peace for his "One Love Peace Concert" in Jamaica. During an American tour in late 1980, Marley fell ill at a series of shows at Madison Square Garden. The toe injury he had received playing soccer had become cancerous, and through medical tests it was determined that the cancer had spread to his brain, lungs and stomach. On May 11, 1981, Marley died in a hospital in Miami.
